The New Sinus Treatment You Haven’t Heard About Yet (Works Better Than Antibiotics)

In order to get rid of a chronic sinus infection, most people take antibiotics. However, these drugs will never get to the root of the problem because they heal the symptoms temporarily. The antibiotics actually aggravate the problem because they destroy both the bad and good bacteria it the nasal passages, and when you don’t have good bacteria in the nasal cavity, it means that you don’t have any protection against the accumulation of bad bacteria.

But luckily for us, Dr. Mas Takashima, director of the Sinus Center at Baylor College of Medicine, is trying to fight off sinus infections by developing new therapies that include baby shampoo sinus irrigations and probiotic nasal rinses. According to Dr. Takashima, these new therapies specifically target the bad bacteria, which is very helpful for those who suffer from both chronic and acute sinusitis.

HOW DO THE THERAPIES WORK?

Takashima says that the concept behind baby shampoo irrigation is to cleanse the nasal cavity with a surfactant, which means that shampoo breaks down the oily layers that protect bad bacteria from being removed.
“We always tell our children to wash their hands with soap, not with plain water, in order to clean bacteria from their hands. We use the same concept is being used in the sinuses,” said Takashima.
For best results, the solution should contain a half teaspoon of shampoo in 1 cup of saline. To make a saline, you will need to mix 3 heaping teaspoons of salt with 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda and store in a small Ziplock bag. Add 1 teaspoon of the mixture and a half teaspoon of baby shampoo to 1 cup of lukewarm boiled water.
Use an infant nasal bulb to draw the liquid, then gently flush your nostrils with it.

Additionally, Dr. Takashima also recommends you to add a probiotic rinse to replenish healthy bacteria and prevent reoccurrence of the symptoms. Use the same instructions to make the saline solution, but instead of adding a shampoo, open a probiotic capsule and pour the content into the mixture.

Takashima has also stressed the importance of consultation with the doctor before you try the therapies at home. This is because there are many different causes of sinus infections and it’s important to ensure that you are treating the right one.
