Should We All Go Vegetarian? What Types of Meat Are Actually Cause Cancer?

We have always known processed foods, especially processed meats, were bad for us. Unfortunately, many of us looked the other way and shoved another piece (or 5) of bacon in our mouths. The time of denial has come and gone thanks to a report from the World Health Organization. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer agency to the World Health Organization, now classifies processed meat as a carcinogen. In layman’s terms, something that causes cancer. They also stated that red meat is “probably carcinogenic”. Here’s what you need to know before you make your next trip to the grocery store.

What is Processed Meat?
Meats are considered processed when they undergo a process of preservation such as, smoking, canning, freezing or they have had chemicals added to them. Some examples of processed meats are hot dogs, chicken nuggets and packaged lunch meats.

Are We All Going to Die?
No! While the World Health Organization has classified processed meat in the cancer causing category, that doesn’t mean that it is so toxic that we are all going to die after one hot dog. The simple fact is that the more processed meat we eat, the greater our chance of developing colon cancer. For those that consume the processed meat equivalent of one hot dog a day, your colon cancer risk increases by 18%. For those that don’t, your risk is much less.

So Should We All Go Vegetarian?Again, the answer is no, although there are some good arguments that can be made for cutting meat from your diet. The best thing to do is limit your processed meat consumption and focus on organic non-red meats.

What’s So Bad About a Little Processed Meat?Other than a little cancer (written sarcastically) processed meat can leave a lot to be desired in how it is prepared as well as how the animals are raised and what they are fed. In a video produced by BuzzFeed, they explain 15 facts about processed meat. This eye opening video highlights some very disturbing facts about what exactly businesses are allowed to do to your food. For instance, did you know that it’s legal to have four rodent hairs in every 100 grams of processed meat you buy? That’s four rodent hairs in less than half a cup of meat! Companies are also allowed to dye the food they feed to the animals because they aren’t fed their normal diets causing their meat to turn a different color.

The Bottom LineThe World Health Organization is not suggesting you give up the hot dog at the ball park or deny your inner child a chicken nugget now and again. What they are suggesting is everything in moderation. It’s not healthy to consume too much of anything, especially not processed foods and meats. Stick to a basic diet of healthy fruits and vegetables along with meat obtained from reliable sources. That way you know the animal was raised in a healthy and humane environment. If you’ve already been named the king of the deli counter you may want to get checked out by your doctor to get an assessment of your colon cancer risk and what you can do to get on a healthier path.
