Stephen Keshi dead: former Nigeria super eagles coach dies at 54
Former Nigeria football coach and player Stephen Keshi has died at the age of 54.
Keshi was one of the best known coaches and football figures in Africa.
Apart from his success with African football, the former super eagles defender was also ranked amongst the top 30 best soccer coaches in the world.
Stephen Keshi is widely considered as one of the most successful coaches in African football.
The man nicknamed "big boss" because of his bulky frame, had three spells in charge of the senior Nigerian football team Super eagles.
During his football playing career, Keshi won the Nations Cup with the Super Eagles in 1994. But he made history when he went on to coach the Nigerian side in three different spells and win the nation cup again in 2013.
This feat made him only the second person along with Mahmoud El-Gohary of Egypt to win the Nations cup both as a player and a coach.
On the international stage Keshi led the Nigerian super eagles to a last 16 finish in the 2014 World Cup.
Keshi had a 20 year playing career and he played for European clubsides like Anderlecht and also clubs in France. He ended his football playing career in the United States and Malaysia.
He won 64 caps for his country Nigeria and had a spell as the super eagles captain.
He scored a total of nine goals for Nigeria.
He also had successful stints as a coach for the Mali and Togo football national sides.
Stephen Keshi died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 54.
His wife Kate died last year December after battling cancer for 3 years.
Keshi and Kate are survived by four children.
