Busy A list Hollywood actress Zoe Saldana is battling autoimmune disorder Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
The unfortunate diagnosis has led the star to make some serious lifestyle changes. The Star Trek actress, 38, reveals she has had to make drastic changes to her lifestyle, including going on a gluten-free diet, as a result of the ailment, which causes the body's immune system to attack its thyroid gland.
Not a fun disease for anyone, especially an actress known for her energetic movie roles.
Speaking to Net-A-Porter's Edit magazine, the star explains how the disease makes her constantly feel run down, and as if she's always fighting off an infection.
"Your body doesn't have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it's always inflamed," the mother-of-two explains.
"You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean."
She was quite carefree about her health when she was younger. The actress admits she wasn't particularly concerned about her health during her youth, as she was convinced she would never fall ill.
"I had a great time in my 20s," Zoe says. "Then your doctor says you're losing calcium in your bones. What's that?! I would hear those conversations with my mum and grandma, thinking I'd never get there. I'm going to live forever! But all of a sudden it hits you."
Now in her late 30s the celebrity now has to cope with autoimmune disorder Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
However the debilitating condition did not stop the actress from working. On the contrary, Zoe Saldana has taken on quite a large number of movie projects, and she's going through them with her usual excellence, charisma and energy.
