It was treated as a minor bump and bruise. At first her parents thought it was just bruised but after two weeks without improvement they took her to hospital for an x-ray.

That's when the real shocker came. Initially doctors believed she had sustained a stress fracture but an MRI scan a few weeks later showed that she had cancer.

Gabi's mother Debbie shared her thoughts with us about what occurred during this difficult time:

'We went to the doctor and he told us the news. He said, 'your daughter has what we think, could be cancer. A type of cancer called Osteosarcom a bone cancer '.

'We were shocked. He had to repeat what he said because I didn't believe him. I didn't think my ears heard him correctly.

Their daughter was distraught, but brave, if a little confused about what had befallen  her.

'Gabi asked me why this had happened to her and we said you know sometimes bad things happen to good people we don't know why but we have to do our best to get through it - and that's what we did.'

She was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to dance again, but then doctors recommended an uncommon solution.

Thanks to a revolutionary surgery, doctors were able to reattach her foot, which has allowed Gabi to use a prosthetic leg in news ways and continue her dance career.

A complex procedure that offers a second chance. After removing her knee joint, surgeons rotated her foot a full 180 degrees and rejoined it to her leg allowing it to function like a knee. When Gabi points her foot, the prosthetic is straight, and when she flexes her foot, her prosthetic leg bends.

"It’s a unique surgery," Gabi said.

"Not for everybody, but it was worth it for me."

Five years later, Gabi now takes pointe, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, and jazz dance classes, and dances competitively. She’s also a national spokesperson for The Truth 365, a cancer awareness organization for kids.

We wish you the best Gabi—keep on dancing and keep on inspiring.
