  • Cooking time: 20 mins
  • Serves: 4

Ingredients for making Munthiri Kothu (greengram Jagerry Balls):

  • Green Gram (Payaru) 2 cups
  • Powdered jagerry  1 and 1/2 cups
  • Fresh shredded coconut 1 cup
  • Green Cardamom powder 1/2 tea spoon
  • Oil for deep frying

For batter:
  • Rice flour 3 tb spoons
  • Maida/All purpose flour 2 tb spoons
  • Corn flour 1 tb spoon
  • Salt 1/4 tea spoon
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tea spoon

How to make Munthiri Kothu (greengram Jagerry Balls)?

Step 1
Heat a pan and dry roast the green gram to golden brown in medium flame and transfer it to a bowl.
Then dry roast the coconut also to golden colour and keep separately.
Once the roasted gram gets cooled down powder it in a blender to powder.

Let it be slightly coarse but not very coarse. Finer than semolina but not as fine as rice flour.

Add the roasted coconut and cardamom powder to the powdered gram and mix them well.
Keep them on a broad bowl.

Step 2
Heat the jagerry with a cup of water and once the jagerry dissolves filter it to remove the dirts if any.
Allow the filtered jagerry water to boil till it thickens like honey consistency and sticky.
But there is no need for any string consistency.
Now pour this syrup on the stuff in the bowl.
Mix well with a ladle.

Grease the palm with ghee or oil and make small gooseberry size balls out of it and keep aside.
Mix all the three flours adding salt, turmeric powder  and water to idli batter consistency.
Step 3
Heat a pan with oil.
Dip the balls in to the batter and drop in to the oil.

Fry to golden golour.
It can be kept even  for a week.
