The massive and consistent consumption of this popular food by Nigerians is probably why some individuals decided to criminally exploit the market by devicing a cruel, and even deadly scheme of fabricating rice with plastic!
Well over 100 bags of Plastic rice in Nigeria has, before it got into the hands of unsuspecting consumers.
Nigerians and rice have always had a close relationship. The starchy carb food being one of the main diets amongst diverse tribes and ethnic groups, in the populous West African country.
According to reports, Nigeria has confiscated 102 bags of "plastic rice" smuggled into the country by unscrupulous businessmen, the customs service says.
The consumption of rice rises dramatically during nation wide festivities. Lagos customs chief Haruna Mamudu said the fake rice was intended to be sold in markets during the festive season.
Dangerous diet. He said the rice was very sticky after it was boiled and "only God knows what would have happened" if people ate it.
Not wanting to point fingers without solid proof. It is not clear where the seized bags came from but rice made of plastic pellets was found in China last year.
The king of all foods. Rice is the most popular staple food in Nigeria.
The BBC's Peter Okwoche says it is the only foodstuff that crosses cultural and ethnic lines across the country.
Investigations are under way to establish how much of the contraband has already been sold.
The customs official called on "economic saboteurs who see yuletide season as a peak period for their nefarious acts to desist from such illegal" business activity.
Mr Mamudu did not explain how the plastic rice was made but said it had been branded as "Best Tomato Rice".
Since reports of this vile practice has been circulating for several months now, it's almost safe to assume that some of the plastic rice has found its way into the homes of many Nigerians.
