Everyone is aware that smoking is bad for our health. But what if you are pregnant? Smoking and pregnancy are two things that are very dangerous. It puts the mother and baby at risk.  In this post, you will learn about the risk associated with smoking in pregnancy.

1  Stillbirth and Miscarriage
Smoking raises the risk of a miscarriage and stillbirth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely than other women to hava a miscarriage. 

 2) Bleeding in pregnancy
Bleeding in pregnancy is a medical emergency because the life of the woman and the baby are at  risk. Furthermore the placenta can separate early which will result in bleeding and if there is no medical intervention, it can lead to maternal and fetal death. 

3) Birth defects
Cigarette contains so many compounds, some of which can cause cancer. smoking can cause this compounds to get into the bloodstream. If these compounds inter the bloodstream, it can cross the placenta and cause birth defects in the baby. Birth defects such as cleft lip or cleft palate has been associated with smoking during pregnancy.

4) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
SIDS occur suddenly and the cause is usually not known. Research has shown a significant relationship between SIDS and smoking during pregnancy


5 Premature Deliveries and low birth weight
A premature baby is one who is born before 37 weeks of Gestation. The survival rate of preterm babies in developing countries is low compared to that of developing countries. Smoking increases the risk of a premature delivery. A baby whose weight is less than 2.5 kilogram is considered to have low birth weight. 

6 Brain defects
children born to women who smoked during pregnancy have a risk of decreased brain function. They may have low IQs and learning disorders. 

Second hand smoking can also affect pregnant women. second hand smoke refers to that which is exhaled by a smoker. Therefore, if  smoker smokes beside a pregnant woman,  her baby can develop asthma, and some allergies.
