Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson reveals Champions League regret

In a rare admission of regret,  legendary Manchester United manage Sir Alex Ferguson revealed his one regret from his Champions League finals.

The stunning revelation came from his side's 2008 Champions League final win against bitter rivals Chelsea: it was leaving Park Ji-Sung out of his squad that night.

The South Korean pace maker was overlooked by the normally intuitive Scot as United claimed their hands on their third European Cup with a penalty shoot-out win against the blues on a very emotional night for both sides.

Tough decision maker. Ferguson was well known for his ruthless decision-making in big games but Park was expected to be included in the squad after playing every minute of the side’s back-to-the-walls semi-final tie with Barcelona. The tireless Park was an important player leading up to the victorious final against Chelsea.

Still on his mind. And, in a rare admission of regret, Ferguson says he still thinks about leaving Park out to this day.

The South Korean playmake was a key reason United reached the final.

According to the Scot: ‘To win the European Cup is fantastic,’ said Ferguson.

‘It was a really great bunch of players with a great attitude about them and a good, strong squad.
‘My problem in the 2008 final, maybe I even regret it to this day, was I left Park Ji-sung out completely in the final. He’d played such a great role and that’s the problem when you get to these finals.’

He made reference to leaving out another talented player years later.

‘At Wembley [in 2011] I did it to Dimitar Berbatov and he took it badly. He didn’t deserve it. No player deserves to be left out of the final.

Ferguson's unparalleled success has been really hard to replicate by the three coaches that have come after him. Although he recently stated that it appears current Man U coach Jose Mourinho is finally stepping up to  fill his shoes, as a worthy replacement.
