Ever since Since Rio Ferdinand turned to a boxer and shocked the sporting world, these are the questions on alot of people's minds—is Rio smart, crazy or just plain dumb?

The second has been the most likely answer for many. I mean the man's a sporting legend—in football!  He Retired as one of the most accomplished footballers in history and respected worldwide for his illustrious contributions  to the round leather game.

For the Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand , those of us familiar with his games, remember that the man was a wall. Strikers never liked coming up against him then.
Rio Ferdinand is footballer turned boxer
But that was at the peak of his footballing powers and he retired smartly—with a lot still left in his tank.
So it's a wonder, why he wants to use up what ever is left,  by having his head knocked in by athletes who only ever knew how to use their fists in a sport that requires just that.
The 38 year old Brit is so confident he can make a solid impact that being knocked out is not his immediate worry.

Back when he made the announcement during a press conference last month, had stated he 'wanted a belt' - something which raised eyebrows with some of the seasoned fighters already involved in the sport.

But just when most people were about to consider him stark Raving mad, the legendary defender backtracked a little. On Monday morning during an appearance on UK TV, a more realistic Ferdinand set his targets a lot lower—To the relief of many of his fans who want to remember him expertly knocking a ball about, and not expertly getting his face bashed in by some seasoned slugger.
"I want to see if I can get a license and become a professional and have one fight," Ferdinand told BBC Breakfast.

"I am not looking to have a career here. I am looking to have a professional fight and I will see where I go then. It might grab me and say 'I want to stay in here'.

"I need to get a license first. I am taking this seriously, this is not a joke, hopefully I will get a license, go on to become a professional and fight someone.

"Boxing can't be a gimmick. If I take it lightly I will get hurt," he added.

Thankfully Ferdinand will not be the first Premier League star to swap boots for boxing gloves. But how did the other two who followed the same path fare in their boxing goals?  Success or failure, or a failure to launch?  Ex-Birmingham City and Sheffield United man Curtis Woodhouse claimed English and British straps during his career, which he reignited this year after initially hanging up his gloves. Super Successful!

And what about The recently retired Leon McKenzie, who played for Norwich City among other top tier sides? He failed in his own bid to win England and Southern Area belts over the past year. Failure?

But to his disadvantage, Ferdinand faces an even tougher task than either Woodhouse or McKenzie though, with plans afoot to fight in the heavyweight division against bulkier men who can really pack a punch. Picture Ortiz and Wilder.  Not a very heartwarming image is it?

Rio is a great boxing fan. But maybe he is getting carried away like so many fans before him had been— Watching pro fighters in the ring making it look easy, and actually start believing it is easy. No it isn't. It is one of the toughest and most brutal sport in the world.

I wonder what Rio's good friend, world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua thinks about all this.

But after all is said and done, you've got to admire the former Red devils player—Rio Ferdinand has got guts.
