It's not every day a Russian president tries to make amends with the United States.

With the unforseen and unprecedented chaos that rocked the world in 2016, it is only smart to do everything possible to prevent further trauma.
President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump
President Vladimir Putin want to be friends with Trump and the United States, according to a speech he made to the Russian people recently.

In the past Putin has used set-piece speeches to lash out at the West and the United States in particular, but this time—surprisingly,  he reined in his criticism and focused most of his speech on domestic social and economic issues—for a change.

Here is what the famously stubborn leader told a Kremlin audience: “We don’t want confrontation with anyone. We don’t need it. We are not seeking and have never sought enemies. We need friends.”

With US-Russia relations at its worst in decades, his speech is a breath of fresh air.

He added: “We are ready to co-operate with the new US administration. We have a shared responsibility to ensure international security.”

Any US-Russia co-operation would have to be mutually beneficial and even-handed, he said.
During the US election campaign, Putin had made it clear that he favoured Trump to win.

He has spoken previously of his hope that President-elect Donald Trump may help restore tattered US-Russia relations, and analysts said he was unlikely to want to dial up anti-Western rhetoric before Trump’s inauguration in January.
Putin on US Russia relations
The Russian leader said he was hoping to find common ground with Washington, in particular on fighting global terrorism - a reference to Syria.

Russia hopes Trump will give them a freer hand there and co-operate militarily to fight Islamic State.

Putin’s tone may have been softer than usual, but he still made it clear that Russia would continue to robustly stand up for its own interests.

Complaining about what he said were “myths” about Russian aggression and Russian meddling in other countries’ elections, he said Moscow wanted to independently decide its own fate.

“We will build our future without advice from anyone else,” said Putin.

The main target of Putin’s speech appeared to be the Russian people though.

This is a great step for improvement of living standards for Russia and a healthier relations with the US and the West.
