Thur dal Rice (Thuvaram Paruppu Sadham)
Thuvaramparuppu Sadham is an age old traditional recipe of Tirunelveli. I can say authentically that this is a complete balanced main course with all essential nutrients. It finds place in the menu at least once in a month especially on Sundays. An inviting meal with exotic taste that should be relished with Aviyal and crisps....

INGREDIENTS FOR THUR DAL RICE:
- Rice 1 cup
- Thurdal 1/3 cup
- Coconut grated 3 tb spoons
- Cumin seeds 1tea spoon
- Red chillies 4
- Shallots / Baby onions6
- Garlic heads 6
- Tamarind juice 1 cup
- Drumstick leaves / Murungai keerai 1 cup
- Salt to taste
- Water 3 1/2 cups
- Ghee 2 tea spoons
- Mustard seeds and chana dal for seasoning
HOW TO MAKE THUR DAL RICE?
Grind the coconut, chillies, shallots, garlic and cumin seeds dry to coarse mixture and keep aside.
Soak Thurdal for 30 minutes in water. Add washed rice to it. Add all other ingredients mentioned above to it except ghee and seasoning items.
Add the coconut mixture too. Add required salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Pressure cook up 4 whistles. (Can also be cooked in Rice cooker with one cup extra water)
Once the steam is released saute it with the seasoning items in ghee.
Serve hot with Mixed vegetables in coconut gravy and any crisps

This traditional recipe gives:
Carbohydrates from rice, protein from dal, iron and calcium from drumstick leaves, required fat from coconut, spices from garlic and shallots and the side dish provides the nutrients from all vegetables!!!
