Actress Halle Berry calls her Oscar win meaningless years after joining list of black actors to win Oscars
The Academy awards have been around for almost a century Now. And in that time a total of 20 black actors and actresses have won the Oscars. The highly coveted award which rewards excellence in movies and movie making has seen alot of racial controversy in its time.
Many have argued that the academy nominates mostly white people every year for the prestigious golden statue.
Back in 2002 talented actress Halle Berry received an Oscar to become the first Black woman in History to win Best actress. And in her memorable and emotional acceptance speech, Berry dedicated her Oscar to "every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."
But 15 years after her historic win, no black woman has been able to achieve the same feat. According to her, the opportunities are not at all like she imagined they would be. In fact, Berry went further to say her win was meaningless, since it essentially did nothing to promote diversity in Hollywood.
According to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, adjustments are being made to address the issue. They have since made strides to include more women and minorities. They have also revealed its "most diverse" class of new members in Academy history.
The last Black actor to win is Mahershala Ali in 2017 for his role in Moonlight. And legendary actor Sidney Porter was the first Black to win the Best actor award for his role in Lilies of the field in 1968. While Denzel Washington's win for Training day, made him the first black person to win two oscars, after winning best supporting actor for his role in Glory.
